I was browsing the recipes on AmericasTestKitchen.com when I came across an interesting entry for scones. I’m a sucker for baked goods, especially items I can have with my coffee or tea in the morning, so this looked like a winner. I love maple, and I hadn’t yet made an oatmeal scone, so without hesitation, I whipped up a batch.
One of the things I like about America’s Test Kitchen is that they do all the dirty work for you to come up with really solid recipes. You can pretty much guarantee that anything they have listed will come out reasonably well even on the first take, and they are notorious for selecting wonderfully basic “meat and potatoes” kinds of recipes. About the only thing I would have changed was to add a bit more maple syrup (or perhaps raw sugar – big crystals – on top) to give them a tad more sweetness. I like my scones a little more on the desert side. I found that these really went well warm with apricot preserves smeared on top. Yummy!
